About the project
Much like the record itself, we wanted to be more ambitious than ever when it came to the videos for the two main singles: Backbone and Flashes Of Light.
This led to two full-day shoots, a multi-location shoot for Backbone, and a more technical visual shoot for Flashes of Light.
It was a monumental task to prep, film, colour grade, and edit them solo but the two videos came out so well that it was worth all the effort.

The Process
The process here begins with two things: the decision on the singles for the record, and the visual identity and messaging developed for the record as a whole.
I had a number of conversations with Ed about the single choices, and it was clear that Backbone and Flashes of Light were the best choices sonically and for the clarity of the overall message of the record.
From there, it was about working closely with Ed on how he wanted to display that message, particularly as his preference is to leave his songs open to interpretation where possible.
From the discussions and the lyrics, plus the ideas Ed brought to the table, I created storyboards and a plan for the two shoots and went out on location to film them.
There were challenges at each shoot, either weather issues or tech issues (eg. the projector used on Flashes of Light), but at the end of each shoot we had more than enough footage.
The editing stage was the longest part, mainly due to the volume of material captured from the shoots. I went back and forth with Ed on various draft edits until we reached the sweet spot, leading to the final product above.
